Don't Let Jewels Lose Their Sparkle-Sunday 14th of May 2006 11:09:02

Christmas has come and gone as has Valentine’s Day and the wedding season is now well and truly upon us. Perhaps you were lucky enough to get a special piece of jewellery as a present, or maybe you’re getting married or engaged later this year.

Rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings are all popular choices as gifts and are often cherished for many years and passed through generations. But a North Yorkshire-based jeweller is advising people to look after their jewellery to prolong its worth.

Charlotte Fleming runs E. DeWastney Jewellers in the Barker’s Arcade in Northallerton.

She has this advice for taking care of your jewellery: -

“Jewellery is always a precious gift and, more often than not, people are now spending considerable amounts on it for their loved ones. However not everybody knows how to look after it correctly.

“I always spend time with my customers advising them of how to properly care for their jewellery and I have three main pieces of advice: -
„X Don’t wear your jewellery all of the time- gardening, washing-up and going to the gym can all be damaging.
„X Forget old wives tales! Gin, vodka and other spirits will not make your diamonds sparkle! Stones and chains need only be washed with warm water and washing-up liquid.
„X Every 6 months take your jewellery back to where you originally bought it from, if you can, for an ‘MOT’. All jewellers should check over your piece to ensure it is still in good condition. Most will also clean it professionally whilst you are there too.”

Charlotte also spends much of her time repairing and re-designing damaged or broken items of jewellery and she is keen to advise people on what to do if this happens: -

“Wear and tear is very common but people do also come to me with missing stones. If you do find yourself with damaged jewellery always seek professional advice on getting it repaired. Apart from anything else if you were to lose the piece of jewellery, or if it were stolen, an insurance company would not pay out for broken items.

“Above all treat your jewellery as an investment no matter what the value. Jewellers should always advise on the best way to look after your pieces when you buy them- it is something that I am passionate about as jewellery is so personal and precious.”
