Al Fresco Dining At North East Garden Centre-Friday 07th of July 2006 10:43:52Cherry Hill Garden Centre on the outskirts of Middlesbrough has opened its new café extension. The company, which is one of the Tees Valley’s longest-established garden centres, has seen a huge increase in the popularity of the café since it launched in 2004. Now a large, outdoor patio area set in a pretty garden with spectacular views across the Tees Valley has opened which nearly doubles the size of the café’s capacity. To coincide with the opening of the terrace Cherry Hill has also launched a new summer menu which will offer dishes such as pastas, salads, speciality burgers, a summer grill and charcoal grilled chicken alongside some of the café’s popular home cooked food. In addition the area is now also going to be available for private functions and meetings. Cherry Hill was established by Norman Wall in 1963 and is now run by his two daughters, Janet Summers and Judie Livingstone, and his son-in-law Paul Stamp who runs the landscape department. In recent years the traditional nursery, based on the Stokesley Road on the outskirts of Hemlington and Coulby Newham, has greatly expanded into a modern garden centre stocking a wide range of plants and garden furniture and has added a landscaping department and an aquatics centre. The café at Cherry Hill opened with just five members of staff two years ago but thanks to its increasing popularity it now employs a team of eleven. All of the food is homemade on site offering a traditional menu including a range of pies and a traditional Sunday roast as well as a variety of cakes, scones and afternoon teas. Debbie Williams, manageress of the café at Cherry Hill, said: “In the last two years the popularity of the café has increased dramatically with many people visiting Cherry Hill solely to use the café. The new outdoor patio area lends itself perfectly to al fresco eating and drinking as it is a real sun trap and has some of the best views of the area. Our homemade, traditional food which offers old favourites such as Victoria sponge, mince and dumplings and fresh pies are proving so popular that we have recently had to start a takeaway service. And to celebrate the launch of our terrace we have added a special summer menu as well.” Janet Summers commented: “We felt we needed more space at the café as it really is a tremendous success. The outdoor terrace extension was the perfect solution to maximise the beautiful area we have available to us. Thanks to the increased space we’re now also able to offer the café for functions and meetings for organisations such as community groups, charities and WI get togethers.” For more information about the availability of the café for functions contact Debbie Williams on 01642 590650
