East Meets West in North Yorkshire-Friday 07th of July 2006 10:52:44A unique cultural event showcasing some of the most dramatic Japanese culture, including a rare opportunity to meet two Geisha, has been brought to North Yorkshire with the help of a local Peugeot dealership. Simon Bailes Peugeot, the North East’s leading Peugeot dealership, provided the transport to help organisers of the Festival of Japan to share some of the events with the local community. The festival, which was organised by Richmond-based Japanese arts company Vintage Kimono, was the largest Japanese event to take place in the UK and organisers were given the rare opportunity to bring two Geisha to North Yorkshire from Kyoto. The Geisha spent last week meeting people throughout North Yorkshire followed by a series of events at Swinton Park Hotel near Masham. These included a Japanese gala dinner, performances and demonstrations of Japanese arts and culture, lectures on the art of the Geisha and a three day arts and crafts fair. Simon Bailes Peugeot provided a Peugeot 807 to allow organisers to travel around the area with the Geisha. Managing director, Simon Bailes, commented: “We were delighted to be invited to help the Festival of Japan as it provided a unique opportunity for our region to experience a fascinating insight into the world of Japanese Art and Culture. Being able to support this event being hosted in North Yorkshire was particularly pleasing as it so clearly engages all of our community, allowing everyone the opportunity to share in the colour, fun and education provided by the exquisite Geisha. ” Katie Chaplin, from Vintage Kimono, is one of the organisers of the Festival of Japan. She added: “The whole festival has been a huge celebration of Japanese culture and we felt honoured to have been trusted enough to bring the two Geisha to England.” Jill Clay, fellow-organiser, added: “Whilst in North Yorkshire we wanted to allow as many people as possible to share in the experience and, by providing us with the necessary transport, Simon Bailes and the team have made this possible as we have been able to open up the event to local schools and communities.” ENDS
