Simon Bailes and Noble Self Drive Set Wheels in Motion for Children from Belarus-Monday 24th of July 2006 10:52:32

Twelve children from one of the most deprived areas of Eastern Europe have enjoyed a healthy break in North Yorkshire with the help of Simon Bailes Peugeot and Noble Self Drive.

Simon Bailes Peugeot, the North East’s leading Peugeot dealership, joined forces with one of their longstanding community partners, Noble Self Drive in Darlington, to provide a minibus to help a local charity, the Friends of Chernobyl Children, transport the seven to ten year olds around the region.

The children, who are from Belarus which still suffers from the after effects of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster twenty years ago, visit the UK for four weeks for four years of their lives to help boost their immune systems and significantly lower their risk of developing teenage cancers.

The youngsters stay with host families in the Northallerton area and spend their days visiting local attractions, walking in the countryside and experiencing life in schools in the region. Simon Bailes Peugeot has now been supporting the charity for several years but this year it required a minibus to accommodate the planned schedule of activities for the children hence Simon contacted Noble Self Drive who also agreed to be involved.

The trips they have now been able to make have included visits to a wide range of local attractions such as Redcar, the National Railway Museum in York, Lightwater Valley, Flamingo Land, Castle Howard and farms in the North York Moors. In addition to this supervisors have also been able to take the children to see local doctors and dentists and helped them to learn about healthy eating.

Audrey Trewhitt, from the Friends of Chernobyl Children, commented: “These visits are especially important for the children as research has proven that they build up their immune systems enough to prolong their lives. It costs in the region of £7000 every year to bring the group over to the UK and as well as lots of fundraising activities, like raffles and book fairs, we rely on the tremendous support of the local community. This year’s donation of the minibus has meant that we have been able to take the children all over the area which they have found exhilarating. The fact is that without the support of people like Simon Bailes and Colin from Noble’s and the host families these visits simply wouldn’t be possible.”

Simon Bailes added: “Having supported this fantastic charity for several years we were very keen to enable them to get the kids out and about as much as possible on their visit this year. I rang Colin Gillespie at Noble’s and I was delighted that he agreed to provide a mini bus without hesitation. Having such a generous community partner is extremely rewarding and, of course, the benefit to the children is truly life enhancing.”

Colin Gillespie, managing director of Noble Self Drive Ltd said: “We were more than happy to help this extremely worthwhile cause. This year sees us celebrating 25 years in business and to commemorate this anniversary we have been involved in a number of charity projects and this project is by far the most rewarding.”
